One of my father’s brothers Gus, son of Alfred Hawks the Hadleigh schoolmaster, after the 1914 war joined the firm Monk & Glass (well-known for their custard powder and blancmanges) as Sales Manager. The factory was at the back of London Bridge railway station. Gus and his family lived in Golders Green and had an old horse-drawn caravan sited off the Rayleigh Road in a field that is now the site of the doctor’s surgery; No 271. Most weekends were spent there in the 1920s and 30s.
