  • Brilliant pictures – any more in the archives

    {Ed: Yes, Dave; there are many more which can be found by looking though the articles.}

  • What was the name of the model shop just along from the newsagents on the corner; I think they sold bikes as well?

  • That’s the row of commercial properties which has included the Ancora restaurant, MS Carpet Services etc., directly opposite the Castle PH. Just a note that the date is wrong, as it shows two way traffic, which ceased well before 1977.

  • The red building sticking out in front of the Morris Minor isn’t a pub but it was part of a block that contained Unwins an Off Licence. Another shop was a bakers and another shop Schofield & Martins; along with about five others of the same name had quite a big part of the modern day John Lewis Partnership ie they were Southend’s answer to Waitrose before joining forces with them. If I am right in my research Southend had the first Supermarket in the country.

  • I am interested in the red building sticking out, in front of the Morris Minor in the photo looking East. Was this another pub?

  • All the 1977 photos were scanned from slides which had the date 1977 printed on them.There was a butchers in the High Street called Smith’s.

  • The photos ‘Hadleigh, High Street and around (1977 & 2008)’ make interesting viewing, but one of the High Street (1977) photos appears to show two way traffic heading East (and includes ‘AR Smith family butcher’), while the other shows it heading West. I don’t recall the butchers – is this photo actually from some time earlier than 1977?
