Canadian Troops

By Sally Reeve

Does any one have any memories or information on the army camp in Hadleigh? As a small child we had Canadian troops billeted in our small house. I remember my 'Uncle Frank' from Vancouver and 'Uncle Jack' from Winnipeg. Entertainments and dances were held for them in the Public Hall (now a carpet warehouse).

My brother John and I were living in Woodfield Road, Hadleigh when the Canadian soldiers arrived overnight. They were billeted in Ewan Way and surrounding area. We used to go and talk to them and they gave us sweets. Two of them used to visit us in the evening and once we all went to the Kingsway cinema. One was called Pete. Overnight they disappeared as quietly as they came, and we never heard from them again.
