Howard's Dairies: pictures needed

My Early Years

It was in 1960 when my family moved to this area from London and as we were surrounded by fields and open spaces it all seemed like the “Wild West” to my brother and I.

My father worked for Howards Dairies in Oak Road Hadleigh and my brother and I both worked there until the closure in the early 70s.

Happy Days. We have seen the area change so much during these recent years, but we are so lucky to still have a very pleasant place to live.

If anyone would like to contribute pictures of Howards Dairies in Oak Road to complete this article, please get in touch.

  • Brian,
There is a Benfleet Community Archive which is set up rather like this one. The Benfleet one has a good thread about Howards Dairies, with many photos of various delivery vehicles, tanker lorries, electric milk floats, and depots. I think they were publicity photos but they were of superb quality.

My own interest is in the London Road Leigh depot and shop, which I remember as a child. I also remember the bottling plant at Leigh, which was close to the crossroads of London Road and Station Road (lorries would take the bottled milk to the various depots, for them to deliver to the customers).

I got in touch with the Benfleet Community Archive to find out who has the copyright on the various pictures, but that person wasn’t able to be contacted.

    Hope this helps a bit,
    Geoff

  • Brian, have just found a related photo which I shall be pleased to let you have to be put on this page. It is of a horse and cart that had just been sign written for Howards Dairy by my Father in law, M.Horder at Cross Farm in the early 1930s.

  • I remember Howard’s Dairy very well, the back entrance was in Beech Road. I do not have any photos but I do have a pewter milk can, with brass handles, engraved Howard’s Dairy Ltd. London Road 265. It would have been used to deliver milk to your door in the 1920/30’s from either a horse and cart or hand cart. It was passed down from my parents who must have seen it in use.
