Hidden Buildings Next to Hadleigh Reservoir?

I found this image from 2006 during a very hot summer; does anyone know what the outlines of the buildings are?  Chapel Lane is to the left of the field. It has been suggested that it may be the old brickworks. Looks fairly substantial.

  • Yes, it was a maize maze, I designed and created it, with help from various staff and volunteers from Hadleigh Country Park in the summer of 2006 – it was open throughout August of that year – there was another in the same field (with a different design) in 2007.

  • I can confirm it is indeed the stubble from the old Maize Maze but, hilariously, during the “Consultation Stage” of the Hadleigh 2012 Olympics, I played a naughty trick on ECC Cllr Stephen Castle which he swallowed hook, line and sinker: I was making a song & dance about the hedgerows being destroyed in Chapel Lane and about the road being widened and, during our tête-à-tête, I produced this photo and pulled his leg that it was the crop mark of a Roman Fortification. Needless to say, for just a few moments his Flabber was completely Ghasted, until I confessed and put him out of his misery. He had the last laugh, of course….

    { Ed:  we hear that there is more archaeological work in progress, on possibly Roman remains,  in that area and await progress reports.}

  • I chased around it with my grandchildren. My granddaughter claimed ‘King-of-the-Castle’ when she was first to reach the platform in the middle. According to all the other shouts of joy we weren’t the only ones to like it.

  • Seem to remember the maze theory.

  • In an Evening Echo report of 8th August 2006, it was reported that Hadleigh Castle Country Park had opened its newly grown maize maze for the season. I think that this is what is revealed by the satellite image rather than any buildings. It might be interesting if anyone could supply any photos of the maze in use which could be compared to the satellite image to confirm this or if anyone could provide any more details of the maze, how long it was there for, etc.

  • Wasn’t there a maze cut into that field?
