It’s been a while coming, but with the new Hadleigh and Thundersley Community Archive website actually finding its feet at last, perhaps it’s time to celebrate spring, rather than autumn? Did queens ever dance on the hogback, or indeed, did knights ever joust on the high ground? We don’t have the answers yet, but we can imagine? Perhaps when the castle was a popular royal venue under Edward II about 1314-16? Or while his son Edward III visited, when the castle was repaired and enlarged, the east towers were added and gardens and even a vineyard planted in the 1360s?
Putting on a joust would be a tall order today, but when I first got interested in Hadleigh and its history some years ago I took a little liberty and a beautiful model called Judy helped to bring my thoughts to life.
