Kelly’s is an invaluable guide as a snapshot in time of how districts were seen, and the following selected extracts show some of the ways that things were seen in 1933.
“Thundersley is a parish, near the High Road from Grays to Southend (now known as the A13) seven miles west by north from Southend and 36 from London.”
“The whole of the area has been Town-planned.”
” The Council have provided a cemetery, allotments and 52 houses for the working classes.”

“The church of St Peter, standing on an eminence, is a small but ancient edifice of stone in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of a chancel,  nave of three bays, aisles, south porch and a western turret of wood, rising above the roof, with a shingled broach spire and containing 2 bells.”

“The church was restored and the chancel entirely rebuilt by the Rev. W. W. Talfourd M.A. rector in 1885, when  a stained east window was erected as a memorial to Sir Thomas Noon Talfourd kt. justice of the Common Pleas, who died suddenly at Stafford, 13 March 1854, while in the act of addressing the grand jury.”

“A new west window was placed in 1901 as a memorial to the Rev. William Wordsworth Talfourd M.A. rector 1881-1901.”   “The living is a rectory, net yearly value £421, with 40 acres of glebe and residence…”
