Introduction:
On the eve of the Third Battle of Ypres the British occupied a few buildings along this road. They called them ‘Tower Hamlets’.
They looked out over the valley of the Bassevillebeek in which Herenthage Park lies. The reinforced Albrecht (trench line) runs through the woods of that park. In front of the position was a brook that turned into an impassable marsh as a result of the shelling.
