Suffolk House and the Tookeys

Suffolk House, Charles and Amy, c.1930

Charles William (1858-1935) and Amy (née Mayes) Tookey (1860-1953) standing outside Suffolk House where they lived with their large family for several years. They had at least 15 children born between 1882 and 1904, one of whom was my grandfather, also Charles William Tookey (1885-1940). Suffolk House was on the London Road close to Kents Hill Road, and this picture was probably taken around 1930. Is there anyone who can date it more accurately, or who knows when the house was demolished? The Tookeys had certainly moved out by 1939, possibly after Charles died in 1935. By 1949 Amy was living with two of her grandsons, Charlie (my dad, William Charles Tookey) and his brother Sid in Parkstone Avenue.

  • As with Mark, I also found this randomly. Charles and Amy were my 2 x Great Grandparents (as you know Pat !) In addition to the Suffolk House photo I also have a couple of pictures of Harold Edward during the Great War.

    {Ed:The Great War was WWI}

  • Charles was also my great grandfather. My grandfather being Harold Edward, born 1903.
    Found this randomly on the internet but talking to my mother she believes Suffolk House was still there in 1955.
