James Cunning Murrell 1785-1860 used this very route on moonlit nights to gather herbs, berries, tree bark fungi,and ditch herbs.
He was a Legend a Witch finder, man of Magic,fortune teller herbalist and could cure all ills not only in people but also animals.
They do say he simmered herbs, human hair, finger nails ,and fungi including deadly nightshade into a potion to banish witches from these here parts.
He maintained there were 7 living in 1799 in these here parts of which he managed to banish two of them to Canewdon the remaining three stayed around this area.
Murrell once said “as long as Hadleigh Castle stands there will always be three Witches living within the sound footprint of the three village churches”
St Peters Thundersley, St Michaels Dawes Heath and St James the Less Hadleigh.
Mikey Boy and I started our tour from Endway his house and shoe menders walked the big 1.7 mile circuit and finished at the east end of Hadleigh Church where James the seventh Son of a Seventh Son is buried in a unmarked grave with his Wife and 17 children.
In 1900 a book was written by Arthur Morrison which turned him into a legend and cult hero to this day. My family have handed down many stories because he was my relation John and Steve Choppen’s best mate and drinking pal from the Castle pub 3 minutes from the Endway.
