The Common Limit

Hadleigh Common's Enclosure: an update

In a Hadleigh of earlier times, there was a large piece of common land for the use of all the villagers.  Enclosure meant this was seized and distributed to the largest local landowners.  The marker of the northern limit of the common was a fine ash tree,  a tree which still exists to this day in Commonhall Lane.

A previous article gives more detail of “Enclosure”  and includes a picture of the fine ash tree; now estimated to be over two hundred years old and appears to be in fine health.

The same tree was trimmed in 2021, however, the latest trim is rather more than a haircut.
