The Cornucopia of Hadleigh: House of Holland

The end of the range as an actual shop

Not far from Yeaxleys in yards but a century away in retail practices;  there was once a shop, a veritable amazing emporium of wondrous things in Hadleigh.

We would wonder at the children’s toys (large) and the blow-up items for the sea-side and garden use.  But the end is shown in these pictures.

  • I think Safeway filled the gap. HoH moved in when Safeway (now Morrisons) moved to a bigger site the other side of the car showroom/petrol station. Now, of course, part of Morrisons stands on the old Kingsway/Safeway/HoH site.

  • Hello, the House of Holland mentioned was in Southend at one time; in one of the Arcades by Victoria Station. I assume it came to Hadleigh to fill a gap when the Kingsway Cinema was pulled to the ground and as the author said just a step away from Yeaxleys which in turn was used by a drapers called Thomas from Southchurch Rd at one of the other Arcades in the town. This also shut down and is now a restaurant.

  • It was very odd when they first opened, as I was so used to grocery shopping when it was Safeway. A Saturday morning ritual for myself and my son and daughter was mooching around HoH. A particular memory was the sponge hand puppets of Thatcher and Reagan. Very strange.
