The BBC Guide to researching the history of your High Street
This fascinating 16 page booklet was published by the BBC in 2010. It describes many aspects of exploring the fairly recent past of local areas.
There are many useful tips on how to start. Detailed sources of information are described on pages 10, 11, 12, 13 and 15 (the back cover.)
Hadleigh & Thundersley Community Archive is a member of the British Association for Local History mentioned on Page 11. Some of our articles are highlighted below, to give an idea of research already done. There is much left to do and considerable scope for initiative and exploration.
Key articles on the archive about our shops and shopping streets include
a general introduction to relevant articles here: Hadleigh Shops
Specific shops and shopping areas are examined as follows:
Hadleigh Shops 1939 to 1955
Thundersley Shops 1937 – 1946
Shops in Rectory Road 1930s to Present Day
Shops in Thundersley Village
The History of Kingsway Parade
Happy shop history hunting, and sharing. We look forward to seeing your research – with pictures where possible – for careful inclusion on the H&TC Archive.
