Hadleigh Athletic and other memories

Hadleigh Athletic FC 1964-65

Having only just found the website, I am enjoying reading many of the articles about many of my old haunts and memories. I have fond memories of:
–  Dr James house at the top of Castle Lane where he had a beautiful white horse belonging to his wife.  We used to feed it apples through the fence on the Lane.
–  Going to the Kingsway Cinema as a pre-teen to the Saturday cinema club and Gus Keeling the manager.
–  Scrumping in the Sally Army orchards down by the Castle which was a favourite play area for us all.

The VE Day party photo reminded me of many of our old neighbours and changes to Castle Road over the years. The old allotments between the SA Colonel’s House & Mrs Rigden’s house, now a big detached house.
The two council houses next door to us with Mr & Mrs Pegrum with their sons Ronnie & Neil. Then Mr & Mrs Allen with Pamela & Barbara their daughters. After my mum died someone built a detached house in the garden between theirs and our houses.

I only found the Archive website after someone asked me if I had any photos of Hadleigh Athletic football team and then I saw the ones showing Hadleigh & Thundersley teams. I have attached this one of Hadleigh Athletic from around 1964/5 which you might want to add to the others. The team was run by Cyril Gibbs who played on into his fifties, I played a few times for the second team but only up to 1962 when I went into the RAF. Roy Willis played into his sixties but I am not sure if it was still for HA.

That’s all for now; I will have a look in the loft for some more photos,

The team shown is as follows:
Back row, left to right;
Johnny Pye, Jim Falcoe, John Farthing, Barry Street, Brian Sartain, Cyril Gibbs.

Front row, left to right;
Roger Cousins, Terry Sawford, Roy Willis, Dennis Gray, Barry Clark.

  • My Dad, Len Harding, was manager in the early seventies, with brother Steve playing with Barry Gray, Dickie Bashford, Roy Darnell and the legendary Alf!

  • Johnny Pye worked with Cyril Gibbs but eventually moved to Catholic United in the Southend Borough Combination League.
    I still see him occasionally .

  • Hi Albert,
    Unfortunately you arrived after I was in the RAF, I emailed Roy and he remembered you as a very good player.

  • I have just seen this picture of the 1964-65 team which took me back to this period in time when I moved to Hadleigh because I had taken a contract to work for SMAC the motor company
    I remember Cyril Gibbs/Roy Willis/Roger Cousins from that picture and I wondered if anybody would remember me -Albert Bryan — I had played at a higher level than all the boys but really enjoyed my short time with the team.
