Hadleigh Central Parade - with pictures

Changing faces on the corner

Central Parade, Hadleigh, on the corner of London Road and Rectory Road has seen many changes over the years, and with Café YEMEK  now occupying this prime spot, I thought it worth reflecting on the previous occupants and reaching out into the community for their memories and perhaps any missing photographs.

You may have already logged on to another article on this website G.J.KEDDIE & SONS which also tells about this corner.   Here is a link to that article.

Café Yemek took over the corner in 2024 and in November  opened their new  Café-Restuarant-Bar, serving a blend of Turkish and English cuisine, having moved from their much smaller premises in Rectory Road, just round the corner. Owners Adele and Serdar Gulekoglu have built up a loyal community of regulars.

Previously on the corner was Essex Carpets but most of us remember  Santander for many years, one of the last Banks in Hadleigh. They moved out in May 2019 and I don’t think there was any signage of Abbey National on this site. Those with good memories with remember other occupants of the corner site;  e.g. the London Co-operative Society (1930s), Keddies (1950s), Hearts of Oak and Bradford & Bingley Building Society.

Some photographs will be of interest and even jog memories.

  • I think the shop on the corner of Rectory Rd might have been Dixon’s.
By the way Rob you’re no relation to Tim are you ?

  • To Eileen, there was a shop called Chalks in that parade,
and if my memory serves me correctly it was a florist.

  • I know there used to be a shop next to the butchers called Chalks, could this be it?

  • Unfortunately I don’t have very good eyesight any longer but there used to be a very small shop immediately after the old Co-op store on the corner of Rectory Rd and the Co-op butchers. It sold sweets and tobacco products. I can’t remember the name but more to the point I can’t see it in this photo. Help !
