To and in Daws Heath

Signposts in Hadleigh and Daws Heath

To the left is a picture labelled “Dawes Heath Corner   Hadleigh;” but it is actually one of the corner at the east end of St James’ graveyard;   rather wonderful especially with regard to the masses of tree growth which almost completely blot out our view of the northern half of the graveyard. Some parts of the famous Norman apse can be seen through the under (and over) growth.

In the middle is the more familiar view of the beautiful hedges kept so tidily round the house of that the well-known Daws Heath resident and trail-blazing commuter; James Mitchell, the Limehouse draper. At one time all the land behind the hedges on the right was owned by that gentleman, almost all the way along to Tylerset Farm.

To the right, we see a recent view of the signpost in line with St Michael’s Church.
