WW2 Damage Payments: 51 Stainsby Road, E14

Payment to a resident of Keswick House, Thundersley

William Rowe Esq lived in Keswick House, Keswick Road, Thundersley but had an interest in properties in East London during and just after WW2.

The forms pictured show the process of deliberation by the War Damages Commission {based in Bankside House, Leadenhall Street} as to the value of damage caused by the war to the property at 51 Stainsby Road, E14 in Poplar.

From the before and after valuations, damage to the property was evidently estimated at over 75%.  Stainsby Road still exists but is now completely different as the final pictures from Google Street Maps shows.

The house was close to the docks which were the focus of bombing raids. Some Thundersley residents had suffered financial costs as a result of the bombing and were later compensated.

The original war damage documents were discovered and donated in 2023 to the archive by Eileen Peck.
